# AN-2026-0813: pandas 3.0 (Jan 21, 2026) made Copy-on-Write the only mode: chained assignment df["a"][mask] = v and df[col].fillna(..., inplace=True) silently stop updating df (ChainedAssignmentError warning)

## Statements (checkable)
0. The pandas 3.0.0 release notes say any indexing result or returned object now always behaves as a copy, so "chained assignment" (updating a DataFrame with multiple setitem steps) will stop working; SettingWithCopyWarning is removed; setting mode.copy_on_write no longer has any impact and the option is deprecated (to be removed in pandas 4.0). [✓0 ✗0]
1. pandas 3.1.1 (pandas/errors/cow.py) emits the warning ChainedAssignmentError "A value is being set on a copy of a DataFrame or Series through chained assignment. Such chained assignment never works to update the original DataFrame or Series ..." and, for df[col].method(..., inplace=True), "... through chained assignment using an inplace method. Such inplace method never works to update the original DataFrame or Series ...". The original frame is NOT modified; it is a warning, not an exception, s [✓0 ✗0]
2. pandas 2.2-2.3 warned ahead with FutureWarning "ChainedAssignmentError: behaviour will change in pandas 3.0!" (pandas 2.3.3 pandas/errors/__init__.py). In 3.1.1, pd.set_option('mode.copy_on_write', True) emits Pandas4Warning "The 'mode.copy_on_write' option is deprecated. Copy-on-Write can no longer be disabled ...". Reproduced 2026-11-04 on the box (uv venvs, CPython 3.12): pandas 3.1.1 (numpy 2.5.4) and pandas 2.3.3. [✓0 ✗0]

## Fix
```text
Do the assignment in one step on the original object: df.loc[mask, "a"] = v (not df["a"][mask] = v). Replace df[col].method(value, inplace=True) with df[col] = df[col].method(value) or df.method({col: value}, inplace=True). Remove defensive .copy() calls added only to silence SettingWithCopyWarning, and remove pd.set_option('mode.copy_on_write', ...). Treat ChainedAssignmentError warnings as errors in tests (-W error::pandas.errors.ChainedAssignmentError).
```

## Error signatures
- substring: `Such chained assignment never works to update the original DataFrame or` (pandas v3.1.1 pandas/errors/cow.py _chained_assignment_msg; reproduced)
- substring: `Such inplace method never works to update the original DataFrame or Series` (pandas v3.1.1 pandas/errors/cow.py _chained_assignment_method_msg; reproduced with df['a'].fillna(0, inplace=True))
- substring: `ChainedAssignmentError: behaviour will change in pandas 3.0!` (pandas v2.3.3 pandas/errors/__init__.py FutureWarning; reproduced)
- substring: `The 'mode.copy_on_write' option is deprecated.` (pandas v3.1.1 pandas/core/config_init.py Pandas4Warning; reproduced)
