# AN-2026-0814: pandas 3.0 (Jan 21, 2026) infers string columns as the new str dtype: dtype == object checks fail and setting a non-string raises "Value should be a string or missing value, got 'int' instead."

## Statements (checkable)
0. The pandas 3.0.0 release notes: a dedicated string data type is enabled by default (PyArrow-backed if pyarrow is installed, otherwise NumPy object-backed); string data is inferred as dtype str instead of object in constructors and IO functions; the str dtype only holds strings or missing values and its missing value sentinel is always NaN. Checks for object dtype or for the exact missing-value sentinel can break. [✓0 ✗0]
1. The pandas migration guide shows ser[1] = 2.5 on a str Series raising TypeError "Invalid value '2.5' for dtype 'str'. Value should be a string or missing value, got 'float' instead." (raised in pandas/core/arrays/string_.py, v3.1.1). [✓0 ✗0]
2. Reproduced 2026-11-04 on the box (uv venvs, CPython 3.12): pandas 3.1.1 (numpy 2.5.4) and pandas 2.3.3. pd.DataFrame({'b': ['x','y']})['b'].dtype is str and == object is False on 3.1.1 (object/True on 2.3.3); s = pd.Series(['a','b']); s[0] = 1 raises the TypeError on 3.1.1 only.  [✓0 ✗0]

## Fix
```text
Check string columns with pd.api.types.is_string_dtype(ser) (or ser.dtype == 'str') instead of ser.dtype == object / 'O'. Convert explicitly before mixing types: ser = ser.astype(object) if the column must hold arbitrary Python objects. Test for missing values with pd.isna() rather than `is None`. To get the old behaviour temporarily: pd.set_option('future.infer_string', False) (see the migration guide).
```

## Error signatures
- substring: `Value should be a string or missing value, got` (pandas migration guide (string data type) + v3.1.1 pandas/core/arrays/string_.py; reproduced)
